Farbige Original – Illustrationen

Bereits Jules Vernes Vertragsverleger Jules Hetzel ging schnell dazu über, nicht nur die Werke seines Hausautors umfassend illustrieren zu lassen, sondern ließ auch schon bald einzelne Illustrationen – meist diejenigen, welche ein ganzseitiges Format hatten – farbig wiedergeben. Im Normalfall wurden pro Roman 5 – 6 Bilder bzw. pro Doppelband 12 Bilder sowie die Landkarten in Farbe wiedergegeben. Derartige farbige Illustrationen nannte man Chromotypographien, es handelte sich dabei um ein Farbdruckverfahren, dass schnell sehr beliebt wurde. Auch andere Verleger ließen später das ein – oder andere an den Original – Illustrationen kolorieren.

Ziel der „Seite der Chromotypographien“ soll es sein, diese Chromotypgraphien, in erster Linie Original – Hetzel, hier wiederzugeben. Teilweise liegen Illustrationen in Farbe vor, die sehr schwach in ihrer Farblichkeit sind (v.a. aus der Frühphase dieses Druckverfahrens, aber vor allem auch die Illustrationen der späten Werke ab 1900), oder gar lediglich einfarbig (anders als schwarz) sind. Diese Illustrationen wurden hier im Regelfall weggelassen.

Die Chromotypographien werden Romanweise (chronologisch nach Erstveröffentlichung der Romane) wiedergegeben und können nachfolgend per interner Verlinkung direkt aufgerufen werden.

Bemerkenswert ist bei diesen farbigen Illustrationen, dass sie auch im Bildinhalt größer sind als die normalen Drucke. –/– Remarquable que ces illustrations sont plus grand dans l’image que les illustrations en noir. –/– Very interesting that these illustrations are bigger in their content as the original b/w illustrations.

Un drame dans les airs

Außerhalb der Reihe wurde „Un hivernage dans les glaces“ in einer kleinen Buchausgabe, in der „Petite Bibliothèque Blanche“ (Die kleine weiße Bibliothek), herausgegeben (siehe Abbildung unten Mitte). Dabei wurde ein Ausschnitt aus der Illustration, die später auch als Chromotypographie erschien, als Einbandillustration ebenfalls in Farbe wiedergegeben. –/– Hors de la série „un hivernage dans les glaces“ fut edité dans la „Petite bibliothèque blanche“ (au milieu). Pour cette edition on a pris une partie de la illustration qui est paru plus tard comme chromotypographie, aussi en couleurs. –/– Out of the regular editions „Un hivernage dans les glaces“ (A winter in the ice) was edited in the „Petite bibliothèque blanche“ (The small white librairie) (see below center). For this edition a part of the lateron also as colored illustration was taken on the bookcover.

Diese Chromotypographien sind sehr selten und etwas besonderes, da es sich um vollständig neue Illustrationen der Spätauflage mit niedriger Auflage handelt, die in den früheren Auflagen nicht enthalten waren. Lediglich in einer sehr späten Auflage wurden alle 6 Illustrationen mehrfarbig gedruckt. Aus der Sammlung von Raymond Salles. –/– Ces chromos sont très rares puisqu’il s’agit d’illustrations entièrement nouvelles des éditions après 1900 et d’un tirage assez restreint. Ces illustrations n’existaient pas dans les tirages précedents. Multicoloré c’est seulement dans une tirage très tardé que toutes les 6 chromos étaient imprimés en multicolor. Diese einfarbig in Sepia als auch in Farbe gehaltenen Chromotypographien sind sehr selten, da es sich um vollständig neue Illustrationen der Spätauflage mit niedriger Auflage handelt, die in den früheren Auflagen nicht enthalten waren. Diese Illustrationen wurden durch den Verlag aus dem Buch „La Chine ouverte“ (1845) von E. Forgues entnommen. Erst in der letzten Ausgabe des Verlaghauses Hetzel wurden diese mehrfarbig gedruckt. –/– Ces chromos en sepia et en couleurs sont très rares puisqu’il s’agit d’illustrations entièrement nouvelles des éditions après 1900 et d’un tirage assez restreint. Ces illustrations n’existaient pas dans les tirages précedents. Ces illustrations sont pris par l’éditeur du livre „La Chine ouverte“ (1845) d‘ E. Forgues. Seulement dans l’édion dernier de l’éditeur Hetzel ces chromos sont multicolorés. –/– These chromotypographies in sepia and in color are very seldom as they are completely new illustrations from a late edition with low printing number, not being contained in earlier editions. Die Schule der Robinsons (L’École des Robinsons) 1882

Die mehrfarbigen Abbildungen sind als extremst selten anzusehen, sie sind noch nicht einmal in den gängigen Bibliographien erwähnt. Sie entstammen der letzten Auflage des Romans. –/– Ces polychromes ne sont pas mentionés ou sont inconnus dans la litérature sur Jules Verne (ne pas mentioné chez Bottin et Jauzac) et donc à considerer comme extrèmement rares. –/– These polychrome pictures are unknown or not mentioned in the Verne – bibliographie and so extremly seldom.

Der Grüne Strahl (Le Rayon Vert) 1882

Die einfarbigen Abbildungen stammen aus der Sammlung von B. Krauth, die mehrfarbigen Abbildungen (als Fotographien) von P. Boutry. Letztere wurden bislang in der Verne – Literatur nicht erwähnt und sind daher als extremst selten anzusehen. Die Farben auf den Fotos sind nicht alle originalgetreu auf Grund unterschiedlichen Lichteinfalls. –/– Les images monochromes sont de la Collection de B. Krauth, les photographies polychromes sont de P. Boutry. Ces polychromes ne sont pas mentionnés dans la littérature sur Jules Verne (ne pas mentionné chez Bottin et Jauzac) et donc à considérer comme extrêmement rares. Les couleurs sur les photos ne sont pas toutes originales à cause la situation de lumière quand ces photos étaient faites. –/– The monochrome pictures are out from the collection of B.Krauth. The polychrome ones are from P. Boutry. These polychrome pictures are unknown in the Verne – bibliographie and so extremly seldom. Die erste Tafel mit den zwei Fotografien wurde in der Spätauflage (nach 1906) dem Werk hinzugefügt, die zwei weiteren Tafeln sind nachträglich vergrößerte und kolorierte Illustrationen der früheren Ausgaben. –/– Le premier tableau avec les deux photographies a été inséré dans les éditions parus après 1906, les deux autres tableaux sont des illustrations anciennes agrandies et coloriées. –/– The first table with the two photographies was introduced in the late editions (after 1906), the two other tables are thereon enlarged and colored illustrations of earlier editions.

Robur der Eroberer (Robur – le – conquérant) 1886

Die Spätausgabe erfuhr gleich zweimal Veränderungen. Ab 1903 kam die hier erste s/w – Illustration hinzu, die 3 hier mehrfarbig wiedergegebenen Chromotypographien kamen zu diesem Zeitpunkt nur als einfarbige (anders als schwarz-weiß) Chromos dazu, die beiden hier als Gravuren gezeigten Illustrationen waren in dieser Ausgabe als Fotografien abgedruckt. Erst in der letzten Hetzel – Ausgabe wurden die 3 Chromos mehrfarbig und die Fotos als Gravuren abgedruckt. –/– A partir de 1903 fut ajoutés une illustration (ici la première) en b/n, et 3 illustrations sont parus comme chromotypographies unicolors. Aussi 2 photographies furent ajoutées. Dans la dernière édition de la maison Hetzel les chromos sont devenus multicolors et le photographies repris comme gravures comment montré ici. –/– The late edition appart from 1903 got one additional illustration in b/w, 3 illustrations where printed enlarged and singlecoulored (other than b/w), and two photographies where added. Only in the latest edition from 1910 the 3 chromos became multicolored and the two photos became graved illustrations as shown here.

Nord gegen Süd (Nord contre Sud) 1887

Auch dieser Roman erfuhr in den Spätauflagen Veränderungen, die in diesem Fall einige andere farbig wiedergegebene Illustrationen als in einer vorherigen Ausgabe zur Folge hatten, wodurch die eigentliche Anzahl von 6 Chromotypographien sich auf 9 erhöht. –/– Aussi ce roman fut plusieurs fois modifié, résultant ici dans des différences des chromotypographies, ce qui augmente finalement le nombre de 6 au 9 illustrations en couleurs. –/– Also this novel was modified in later editions, in this case some other illustrations became colored then in an earlier edition, so finaly the number of coulored illustrations was grown from 6 to 9 illustrations.

Page des chromotypographies = illustrations en couleur

Très tôt, Hetzel, l’éditeur de Jules Verne, en vint à faire illustrer les romans de son auteur maison mais aussi bientôt à faire reproduire en couleurs les illustrations grand format, les planches, y compris les cartes géographiques, au nombre de 5 à 6 pour les volumes simples, de 10 à 12 pour les volumes doubles. Le procédé employé pour ces reproductions se nommait chromotypographie. Plus tard, aussi d’autres éditeurs en vinrent peu à peu à mettre en couleurs les illustrations de l’édition originale.

L’intention de la „page des chromotypographies“ est de donner à voir ces chromotypographies, en privilégiant celles, originales, de l’édition Hetzel. Certaines chromotypographies sont pâles (particulièrement pour les premières, mais surtout aussi pour celles illustrant l’œuvre à partir de 1900), d’autres sont uniquement monochromes (autres que noir et blanc) : elles ne sont pas reproduites ici.

Nous présentons ici les chromotypographies roman par roman.

Site of the Chromotypographies – coloured illustrations

Allready Jules Vernes house editor Jules Hetzel quickly came to the point not only to illustrate the novels of his novelist, but also to print coulored illustrations. Mainly the full sized illustrations – normally 5-6 or for doubled volumes 10 – 12 illustrations and the maps came in colored version after about 1890. The way of printing in various colors was named „Chromotypographie“, it was a color printing technic which became quickly very famous once invented. Also other editors lateron colored the old illustrations.

Intention of this „Site of chromotypographies“ should be to show here the original chromotypographies, preferably the ones from Hetzel. Some illustrations are very weak in their colors (mainly the first pictures of that type, but also from the late novels after 1900), or they are only single – colored (other then black and white) – these illustrations normally are not displayed here.

We show the chromotypographies novel by novel.
